Viola Gregg Liuzzo was born in 1908 in Fostoria, Ohio, the daughter of sharecroppers. She moved to Detroit in 1937 at the age of 27, where she worked as a telephone operator for the U.S. Post Office before marrying Robert Liuzzo, a Pullman porter at the Dearborn Station. Four months later, she joined his union local, which had been locked out by the Pullman Company
They were married soon after, and Viola became an activist in Liuzzo's union and a leader among women workers in Detroit's auto plants. On November 1, 1965 at 7:15 p.m., Viola Liuzzo was brutally attacked and murdered by Klansmen while attending an anti-Klan meeting at a church in Birmingham, Alabama.
